*******OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE*******

Central Union Mission – Volunteer Opportunities

Central Union Mission is a wonderful Christ-centered ministry to the neediest in the DC area.  Many at Cornerstone have supported the Mission for years, and it is now one of the mission organizations supported directly by our church.  In addition to financial support, the Mission needs volunteers in areas ranging from helping to prepare food at the Men’s Homeless Shelter, to sorting clothes and other goods donated to the Comprehensive Family Resource Center, to helping with life-skill training, to leading Bible studies, to mentoring – the list goes on and on.  Here is a link to some of the volunteer opportunities:  Volunteer – Central Union Mission (missiondc.org).  In addition, the Mission offers a wide range of unpaid internship opportunities: Internships – Central Union Mission (missiondc.org).  In addition to opportunities for individuals, groups also can volunteer at the Mission.  Perhaps your Community Group would like to host and serve dinner at the men’s shelter.

You can contact the Mission directly about volunteer opportunities. You also can reach out to Dave Hazelton (dave.hazelton@outlook.com).  He would be glad to host a group to visit the Men’s Homeless Shelter and/or the Comprehensive Family Resource Center.  You’ll be inspired and challenged!

*******LIBRARY: Book Reviews*******

The Holy Spirt – Activating God’s Power in your Lifeby Billy Graham, is a timeless study of the third person of the Trinity: what He is, what He does, and how you can—and must—be filled with Him. This wide-ranging book includes many scripture references, both in the Old and New Testaments, to the Holy Spirit’s power and mission, His various manifestations, His gifts, and His fruit. Have you ever sinned against the Holy Spirit? Chapter 10 explains how this can happen and how you can correct it. Throughout, as in all his books, Graham invites you to experience a closer relationship with the Lord.

In Approaching Hoofbeats – The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, published in 1983, Billy Graham focuses on the first six chapters of John’s Revelation.  First, he imagines what it was like for John—his context—at the time he wrote the book. Then he discusses the letters to the seven churches (ch. 2-3) and compares them to the modern-day church. Finally, he discusses each of the four horsemen in chapter 6—white, red, black, and pale—and considers whether their judgments—deception, war, hunger, pestilence and death—are conditional or inevitable. Can they somehow be delayed or averted if certain conditions are met, such as our repentance and faith? Although the examples Graham cites are somewhat dated, the four judgments are still very much with us, and bear continued reflection.

In his book Unholy Spirits, published in 1986, Gary North gives several examples of occult and paranormal activities, such as UFOs, ESP, and New Age mysticism, that have defied scientific explanation. North attributes these activities to satanic influences and warns readers not to become involved in such things. Although this book is somewhat dated, North’s arguments remain relevant in today’s culture. As C.S. Lewis wrote, “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”
